We are delighted to welcome our new Faculty member -Assistant Professor Renana Gershoni-Poranne!
Prof. Gershoni-Poranne is a home-grown chemist, having received all of her academic titles from the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry. Renana earned her BSc in Molecular Biochemistry (Summa cum Laude) and MSc (Summa cum Laude) for her work on functionlization of corannulene in the group of Prof. Ehud Keinan. She then joined the group of Prof. Amnon Stanger, where she completed her PhD studies, working on elucidation of the properties of aromatic compounds and developing methodologies for the identification and quantification of aromaticity in polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons. In 2015, Renana began her postdoctoral research with Prof. Peter Chen at the ETH Zurich, where she continued to expand her expertise in computational chemistry and its applications to physical organic chemistry. In 2017, she was promoted to Senior Scientist, and since then has been leading an independent group and lecturing at the ETH.
As a graduate student, Renana received the Schulich Graduate Fellowship twice, as well as numerous awards for excellence in teaching; as a postdoc, she received the Vatat Fellowship for exceptional female postdocs. In 2019, Renana was awarded a prestigious Branco Weiss Fellowship to support her research into discovery of novel materials using a combination of computational chemistry and deep learning.
In addition to her academic achievements, Renana is well-known in our department for her musical talent. As a classically-trained soprano coloratura, she has received national prizes and has performed in Israel and abroad.
