New carbon allotropes have opened up new areas of chemistry, physics and material science, and many hypothetical allotropes have yet to be synthesized. This presentation will focus on sp- hybridized carbon: polyynes, carbyne and cyclo[N]carbon; the structural characterization of these species by low-temperature atomic-force microscopy, and stabilization throughsupramolecular encapsulation in rotaxanes and catenanes
