Abstract:
Colloidal one-dimensional semiconductor-metal nanorod (NR) heterostructures offer a highly controllable platform for light-induced charge separation, with direct relevance for their implementation in photocatalysis. Advances in the synthesis allow for control over the size, shape and morphology, providing tunability of the optical and electronic properties. This seminar will discuss different research progress on colloidal NR heterostructures and their applications for solar energy conversion, emphasizing mechanistic insights into the working principle of these systems. Following a brief overview of the solar-driven H2 generation mechanism, key efficiency limiting steps, and potential approaches for rational improvement in semiconductor NR/metal heterostructures (such as Pt tipped CdSe@CdS dot-in-rod NRs), this seminar will conclude by pointing out challenges to be addressed in future research.
