Quantum Control of Photoelectron Circular Dichroism

Abstract:

Chiral molecules exist in non-superimposable mirror image conformations, referred to as enantiomers. A striking effect only observed for chiral molecules is photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD). It refers to the forward/backward asymmetry in the photoelectron angular distribution with respect to the light propagation axis when photoionizing an ensemble of randomly oriented chiral molecules. PECD has recently been demonstrated in femtosecond multi-photon photoionization experiments [1]. I will first discuss how the experimental observations can be explained, at least semi-quantitatively, by combining perturbation theory for the light-matter interaction with ab initio calculations for the bound spectrum and a single-center expansion of the photoelectron continuum [2]. I will then present a theoretical proposal for coherent control over the PECD, based on quantum interference between multiple photoionization pathways [3].
