Abstract

Quantum field theory was born out of the necessity of dealing with the marriage of quantum mechanics and special relativity. Indeed, it has become a pillar of modern physics and has been able to provide theoretical predictions in complete agreement with experiment, unlike theories that preceded it which divert from experiment at certain experimental regiments. In this talk we shall present some introductory themes in quantum electrodynamics. We shall present the transformation of the theory from the Hamiltonian to the Lagrangian formalism, which is significantly superior to the former in capturing the covariant nature physics. Covariant representation is imperative for constructing a relativistically compliant theory, for physics itself must be invariant under Lorentz transformations. We shall then proceed to presenting a construction of a scalar field theory and show some of its surprising features.
