In 1824 French physicist Sadi Carnot proposed a theoretical thermodynamical cycle that provides an upper limit to the efficacy that may be achieved during the conversion of heat to work in a classical thermodynamic engine. In this talk a formulation for a “Quantum Carnot cycle” will be presented, using a 1-D partial in a box framework, and show that the upper limit for the efficacy of such a cycle is the same as the classical Carnot cycle. Finally a manifestation of the second law of thermodynamics will be presented by regarding a 3-level M.A.S.E.R as a heat engine.
